CRANES FOR BRAINS DAY IS ON AGAIN!
Cranes for Brains Day is a special day in the calendar where Australian students support children suffering from Brain Tumours. This year the event will be held in week 2 of Term 4 on Friday, October 24. Schools can participate in Cranes for Brain Day either through a paper crane “Fold-A-Thon” and/or on a smaller scale by donating a gold coin for a “Casual Clothes Day with a touch of purple”. Funds raised from this year’s event will go towards the establishment of a specialist brain tumour research team at the University of New South Wales within the new Lowy Cancer Research Centre. Opening in September 2009, the Lowy Cancer Research Centre will be one of the largest dedicated cancer research centres in the Southern Hemisphere, bringing together childhood and adult cancer research at one site. Students participating in the Fold-A-Thon will this year be asked to create ONE VERY UNIQUE CRANE. Along with paper for the Fold-A-Thon, the school will receive one special origami sheet for each student. As a way of teaching the children about the cause, we suggest that each student writes a message to a child in hospital receiving treatment for a brain tumour. The students can then fold the crane and create a “Caring Crane Mobile or Poster” that will be sent from the school to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Oncology Ward as a way of supporting these sick children. Fold-A-Thon schools will also receive a prize for the child who folds the most cranes during the fold-a-thon of a wireless MP3 headset donated by Rebel Sport. 2007 ReportTHOUSANDS OF CRANES SWARM AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLSOver 6,500 students from 30 schools Australia wide have joined in this year's Cranes for Brains Day by participating in either an Origami Crane Fold-a-thon or Causal Clothes day. Cranes for Brains Day is the Cure for Life Foundation’s annual schools fundraiser and this year coincided with International Brain Tumour Awareness Week. Almost 55,000 cranes were folded and organisers hope to raise over $20,000 to support Cure for Life Foundation research into brain tumours and the unique Paediatric Brain Tumour Rehabilitation Programme at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. Students at each school competed in the one-hour fold-a-thon and prizes were awarded to the child who folded the most cranes in each school. (Note the current national record is an amazing 86 by a child in Perth). The origami crane is Cure for Life Foundation’s symbol, selected because in Japanese legend it represents longevity and wellbeing. The Foundation hopes to make this possible for people suffering from brain tumours. To find out more, click here to download a bochure outlining how this year's day worked.
